Jacobite shirt
Hello,
I have been searching the forum for any info on jacobite shirts but found nothing.
We will be getting married in September 2018, in southern Spain, where the heat will be interesting, to say the least. It is not a formal wedding, it is a garden penny-wedding.
Would a jacobite shirt look too informal? Our male guests will be wearing their kilts, and we have advised them not to wear jackets. (Ladies will be advised not to wear heals...dirt and heals make for awkward waddling)
What do you think?
Should he wear a dress shirt and maybe have a regular suit jacket in case it gets chilly at night?
Funds and budgetary reasons also stress our decisions...
Thanks for any input!!

For Spanish heat, I'd take a loose linen natural (unbleached) shirt. With or without collar depend on your preference. But natural linen colour will go well with most kilts and linen is a great fabric to wear in the heat.

That’s pretty reasonable advice. The so-called Jacobite shirts aren’t historically accurate, never apparently, I’m told, part of kilt or Scottish history, more like “pirate” shirts and most of then are polyester based so they’d be anything but cool anyway.

I wouldn't consider a Jacobite shirt appropriate for a wedding at all, regardless of the level of dress. As Father Bill mentioned, they are fantasy costume shirts and pretty silly ones at that. For a casual wedding, I'd wear a modern collared shirt.

You might want to keep a jacket at hand for later (if it gets cold). It is not a requirement to have a vest and jacket for every event.
Here is a photo of me at an event in the heat and humidity of Mississippi during May (sponsored by our member Roadkill). I am interviewing a participant and was comfortable.
I must add that my kilt was pulled up a bit higher than usual but I like the band tucked under my ribs.

Thank you for your help!!
Hmmm...you would think jacobite shirts WERE historically accurate, since they are all over the place when you search for kilt and kilt wear. So jacobite is totally off the table!
Thank you for the feedback.
I like linen shirts, but one question (or 12) when you say loose, do you mean button down or pullover?
Please bear with me! I am trying to get him to be comfortable without looking like a fool, and wouldn't want to insult any of our many Scottish friends/guests.
Prince Charlie is totally out of the question, because of the heat, and it is overdressed for our type of do.
You would think traditional dress would be easier than it actually is.
On another note, is there a rhyme or reason to combining hose with the tartan? I have seen light red argyle hose with dark red kilts, and all kinds of crazy combinations.
I have been reading the forum, and matchy-matchy seems to be "out", but if something absolutely clashes, isn't that just as bad? I personally do not like white hose, I would much prefer he wore grey or any color that matches the kilt we have ordered, but I am not sure about argyle. In all honesty, I don't like argyle for any occasion...
I have attached a pic of the kilt, it is as close to the one we were looking for as we were ever going to find without spending money we don't have on the real thing. We will eventually get 'the real thing' but not just yet.
Thanks again!!

Hi Ely.
Yes, you see the pirate shirts everywhere because there's money to be made and the vendors don't care if it's appropriate, just easy to sell.
Hose: an old suggestion that used to hang around Xmarks was that the colour could "tone in" with the tartan. What that means? Use your own judgement. Another old idea was to match the colour to one of the minor stripes, but you know what? Any colour is likely appropriate. Don't over-think it. If you want to go downscale in colour then something neutral, but frankly, I love my new claret hose, and it's hard to do something that's really "wrong". Glad you don't care much for white, for reasons you'll find all over XMarks, but even then, it isn't "wrong" it just looks like a cheap rental. Same frankly for black in my opinion, but a lot of our folks like it.
Now, there was something else. I'll edit it in momentarily.

Right! Button-down shirts are appropriate. I'll add a couple of pix from my own gallery to perhaps help:

Green kilt, claret hose.

Red kilt, "bison" hose. Note the shirt - short-sleeved, looseish, button-up, casual but not showy.

Blue kilt, similar blue hose... but not my favourite look - too much blue in my eyes.
Take a look at some of the ideas in this thread: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-attire-46888/ These guys rock it!

Thank you Father Bill,
Yes, button down shirts look good, I agree. And pullover linen shirts look like the jacobite ones anyways, so they are a 'no'.
I love your claret hose, btw.
For the kilt he will be wearing, I am thinking a blue-grey, like your 3rd pic. It will tone down the bright blue while happily being 'not white'. Maybe a gunmetal grey, picking up on the darker stripe of the kilt.
I had seen the post you linked me to, but since I didn't see the jacobite shirt (now I know why) I asked here. They do rock their style!!
Hopefully, with 289 days to go, we will figure out what he wants to wear, and make it look good.
Thanks again!!!

For your honeymoon, you could hike the 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago!
Nothing brings a couple together like shared misery...

Funny that, our branch will be organizing a Royal British Legion event for 2019, to do the Camino de Santiago, to raise funds for the Legion.
Habbout that?!?!
