Tartan ID please
As some of you may know, we have ordered two kilts in this tartan, for our wedding. One for the groom, one to make my sash, his flashes and other bits n bobs.
We wanted the Royal Air Force tartan, but sadly, can't afford it. This is one that is pretty close, but not exact.
It is an econo-kilt.
Is it just a non-denominational, fashion tartan? Or is it identifiable?
Should we just call it our wedding tartan, to whomever asks, and be done with it?
For reference, this is the RAF tartan:

It appears to be the Oklahoma State Tartan
Something close in colours is not entirely the same since tartan is defined by the sett and not the colours - the sett being the threads counts that make the tartan 'pattern'. Presuming the RAF tartan is significant, something close won't be. You may be better off finding a tartan that holds some significance for another reason or choose one of the tartans known as "universal". There is a thread on those here >> http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...tartans-41730/

Yep! I learned that AFTER ordering the kilts, AFTER joining the forum and AFTER reading, reading, reading... that'll teach me...
Oh well! It is a beautiful tartan, so we will have to make do. Unless we can afford the real thing before the wedding...

The cheapest I know of for an RAF tartan Kilt is about £400. That's with Scotsweb.
Note, you have to search for Royal Air Force not RAF.
I note on their XMarks it says 10% of for XMTS members, If that applies to Kilts I don't know..if it does that would bring it down to £360, I believe they will supply cloth for you to make bits and pieces from.
(The Letter stating My RAF pension has started arrived yesterday, so the first 2 or 3 the payments will be going towards an RAF kilt. I'm just trying to decide Whether to go to Scotsweb or Mactartans the orginal licencee )

I would think the Scotweb discount wouldn't be much of an offer if it didn't include kilts. I do know that when I got my Scotweb kilt several years ago, they did give me a discount for being a member of another kilt forum. So I would expect the same would apply to X Marks members.
And both tartans look great. And I can think of few more meaningful connections than "it's my wedding tartan."

If you look at the Scotweb advert near the top of the page here, it says clearly that there is a 10% discount offered by them to Xmarks members.

ELY, this may just be informational, or it might be bad news, but if you ordered an econo-kilt you might want to confirm what fabric it is made from. It may be acrylic or polyester-vicose (PV) rather than real wool. If you want wool, you may need to change your order.

It is acrylic, but I knew that. First kilt, and all that. I wanted to make sure we got one for the price we can afford, with all the matching bits (hence the two purchased) In the coming months I will be scouring the second hand sites, and should one in the right tartan pop up, I will snag it!! But this is a 'security blanket'.
I am also looking in the local fabric shops, should the right wool tartan show up. If I get the fabric, the cheap kilt will be used as pattern.
When the budget is as frugal as ours, you gotta be especially flexible.
Thanks for the heads up!
