And to further muddy the waters, somewhere in the distant past it was revealed to me (by an unremembered source) that a woman wearing a sash of her birth family tartan does so over the right shoulder. If she is wearing the tartan of an adopted clan or family (such as the one she married into), she wears it over the left shoulder.
Any substance to this, or just another myth contrived to confuse?

That sounds vaguely reminiscent of the idea that a married man should tie the ribbons on the back of his cap in a bow, while a single man should let them hang free. Whereas I wound up tying mine simply because I discovered that, without the long hair I had when I last wore such a cap as a teenager, the ribbons tickled the back of my neck and got on my nerves.

These suggestions apparently " . . . bear the authoritative approval of the Lord Lyon King of Arms":

No 1. Style worn by clans-women. The sash is worn over the right shoulder across the breast and is secured by a pin or small brooch on the right shoulder.

No. 2 Style worn by Chieftainesses, wives of clan chiefs and wives of the Colonels of Scottish Regiments. The sash which may be rather fuller in size is worn over the left shoulder and secured with a brooch on the left shoulder.

No. 3 Style worn by ladies who have married out of their clan, but who still wish to use their original clan tartan. The sash usually longer than No 1 style, is worn over the right shoulder secured there with a pin and fastened in a large bow on the left hip.

No 4. Style worn by country dancers or where any lady desires to keep the front of the dress clear of the sash (as, for example, when wearing the ribband of a chivalric order, or any orders and decorations). This style is similar to the belted plaid, and is really a small arisaid. It is buttoned on at the back of the waist, or is held by a small belt, and is secured at the right shoulder by a pin or small brooch, so that the ends fall backwards from the right shoulder and swing at the back of the right arm.

Bruce Scott - This is what we tell ladies at the games we attend. Right is Right except for the exceptions you note. Also, all the dancers we meet swear that they have a specal dispensation to wear on the left shoulder.

I seem to remember hearing this in my youth, however that was at a time when I was also hearing what turned out to be a lot of misinformation on tartan and such rules. So I can't say for sure if this is true or not, but I am somewhat skeptical.
