I've been involved in the pub trade as a brewer for quite some time now so it is of particular interest to me.
As said above, tipping isn't expected in a pub. The 'one for yourself' isn't regular but if you like the bartender it isn't a bad thing nor will it single you out. Most staff really appreciate it - just so you know they'll have it at the end of their shift not right there and then.
You can open a tab but most people pay each time they go up to the bar.
Also, most bar staff, in decent pubs, will have a decent knowledge of the products for sale so don't be afraid to ask for the local brew or advice on what is good.
Restaurants are different and tipping is more expected (10-20%). Tips will go into a jar and shared out at the end of the night.
Servers don't rely on tips to make up their wage.
