    Kilkenny Jacket & Vest Color

Just curious more than anything because I'm planning on getting a Kilkenny jacket & vest for my wedding. I'd say 99% of pictures I've seen of them for formal wear are black but I've seen the occasional picture with a colored one like a green. Would a colored one ever be worn for a formal occasion or is it only black? Planning on getting a black one but this is purely curiosity.

    Thanks,
    Matt

In the past, colored jackets seem to have been much more common for highland evening wear than today. I think a green Kilkenny jacket would be fine for modern evening wear.

I've seen very dark green versions of this type of jacket and am under the impression that it would be perfectly acceptable for formal occasions.

On this forum, we have seen great-looking photos of formal wear that is quite colorful. There have been Prince Charlie jackets (which are fairly similar to the Kilkenny) in claret (maroon), bright red, and green; as well as velvet doublets in many shades of green, blue, and red. And let's not forget the men in 3=piece tartan ensembles!

I think you could certainly use a colored jacket. The keys would be making sure you had the proper formal accessories (shirt, stud, silver buttons, sporran, etc.) and really "owning" the look by wearing it with visible confidence and savoir fair.

    Congratulations on your marriage!

It is your wedding so do what you like .... that being said I say in our modern times it would be fine, and you undoubtedly will be better dressed than other gents present.
