Well, your hose look to me to be black, which I believe go fine with the tartan of your kilt. I think the others are suggesting, not that your hose don't match or look good, but that other colors might make your ensemble more interesting, so to speak.

Aye, that is something I want to be experimenting a little with, adding a splash of color for a more casual or interesting look.

Not more casual; more interesting only.

["As expected, the kilt drew looks all night, as well as the question "what's under it". Interestingly, three of four people/groups who wanted to know sent surrogates to ask."
I had the same thing happen last weekend at the big St. Pat's event in Dunedin . A guy comes over and asks the age-old question on behalf of the folks at his table.
I opted for a new response: "Well, there's three ways you can find out. Two of 'em are gonna cost you $5 a piece and the other will earn you $14 the hard way."
The last bit is courtesy of the late, great and always funny Rodney Dangerfield (CaddyShack) - I'm never to proud to borrow from the best.
It's amazing - I've been wearing a kilt on weekends for the last month and a half and I've gotten the question at least a couple of dozen times. I'd never, in a million years ask a woman if she's wearing panties. Even my best friend of over 30 years. Never. Very odd. But amusing, I have to say.
At a time like this one must ask themselves, 'WWJDD"

never be afraid
It is my opinion that you should never be afraid of colour in your hose ...... I have 6 different colours in my kilt hose, Claret, Mustard Yellow, Brown, Gray, Lewis Ancient Green and yes the much maligned White hose. ......(from the days of renting my attire)......and in some cases the white hose looks very fine, so don't discount it
The kilt will stand alone!!!! HONESTLY IT WILL !!!!!!
I also have two different waist coats and two different jackets as well as the two different tartan kilts. My sporrans are both black and brown, and with them all, it is amazing how mixing them gives so many different options ........
It seems to be a bit more of a North American and a modern affectation that there should be some matching...... if that is what gives you pleasure and a sense of balance, so be it.
From my experience, as you become more confident in your kilted attire, you may also become more bold......it has had that effect on me and I think I show that confidence when I'm out walk about..... The most important thing is to get the very best quality you can.....even if it stretches your budget... you will never regret it
It really is a marvelous adventure in attire ......I was a "Canadian logger" for almost 40 years, and after retiring my kilted attire has opened another aspect of my personality....I hope you will also get such pleasure....Cheers !!!!

Good point! What I appreciate about the kilt is just this - how color does not make as much as an impression on the formality of the outfit as with classic western suit attire. I am looking at many examples here in this forum and how much variety within personal taste and the (un)written rules of formality is actually possible and good-looking.
Though regional fashion plays a lot into this. I visited the largest kilt shop in Germany this weekend, and the examples on display there where quite matchy and toned down. Good looking for sure, but browsing through the hose I was adviced to match up with the kilt (or go cream, which I see as the least attractive option). Seems to be the go-to around here.
But I continue to love the discussion around formality & fashion and being able to find your own style. And the formal variations look so much better than Saxon/German formal wear!
