I got a nice tweed 5 yard kilt from Scotweb for about £160. A bit green but that only motivates me to get brown and grey ones later. They do 5 and 8 yard kilts and have a good selection of tweeds.

I have one of their Isle of Skye 8 yard Balmoral kilts that is quite nicely made.

The proof is indeed in the wearing. Although there's no maker's mark it's got Sialkot written all over it, which is perfectly fine and of course what "inexpensive, off-the-peg" usually means when it comes to kilts. I have several wool-blend kilts from Sialkot that are well made and have worn exceedingly well, and it looks like this one will be no exception. The straps are real leather and the material is, I'm guessing, 12 ounce, not too thick or thin, with a fine, close weave and subtle but noticeable herringbone pattern with no slubs, and the stitching seems good and tight throughout --the fabric would make for a really nice suit. The GrainReaper was impressed with it and he's the Craftiest Man Alive, so I'm happy and optimistic.
