I figure that if one is already wearing a kilt, it makes sense to follow highland conventions. That is just my view though.

I do not have an event to go to yet (San Diego is ultra casual) and it would likely be a highland one anyway, such as the local Cameron Highlanders banquet in the fall.

I do find the acceptance of colored jackets in formal kilted dress attractive and they don't go crazy with it. It tends to be very dark colors.

Oh, and learn to tie your own bow tie. There is nothing more striking, than after the dinner and the speeches, to pull the ends of your bow tie and drop them.

That's tuxedos though. And kilted dress will always stand out if comparing it to a group in tuxedos. You can try and get your kilted outfit as close to a tux as you want but you can't get around the fact that you have a large plaid garment wrapped around your waist.

A green jacket would look out of place with a tux but if you have a tartan kilt with green in it, I don't see how it would be any more bizarre.

In my mind, one of the most obviously sensible statements yet made.

If your question is "can a bow tie be worn with a five button waistcoat" the answer is "yes."

    I enthusiastically recommend bow ties:
They don't go out of style.
People think you are clever if you can tie them.
They last a long time as it is nearly impossible to spill something on them.

I decided to try this out a little while ago to see what I thought, I have a PC jacket so this was an experiment just to see what I thought. I will let the photo speak but I thought it could be worn just fine with a 5 button waistcoat, here is the photo

And here I am in a coloured PC with most of the rest staying the same. I think both looks work fine. They may not be that traditional but they do work as far as I'm concerned.

Yes the five button best looks fine to me. What did you think of jock’s idea of a black pc vest with a green barathea argyle?

I think that would be fine if you had one to try it with, if not the 5 button black should do fine.
