There's worse habits in life than a closet full of kilts, still won't beat my wife's purse collection and those are used and put away for forever; haven't seen a reuse in 13 years.
I also went with clergy as a first along with a Muir at the same time as its the only clan relation I currently know of. I've added 2 more clergy in purple, one box and one knife for variety. I've also added Culloden and would like to add a Russell as that is my actual name and an Arctic. I also have a kiltman canvas kilt which is nice for working around the house. Really any excuse seems like a good one to me but I try to keep it to a kilt a year.

So you wear a kilt for a year the change it when the year changes?

My first was a budget acrylic kilt bought at a Renaissance Faire. The tartan was Royal Stewart since I love the "assertive" color scheme and my mother's clan (Boyd) is often associated with the Stewarts. The kilt came as a package with some budget accessories such as a cheap daywear sporran (with chain), a kilt pin, and some matching flashes.
After wearing the acrylic number a few times and getting very positive responses, I decided to upgrade to wool. I ordered a 5-yard, lightweight (11 oz.) "casual' kilt from Scotweb in Boyd tartan. It looks and feels much better than the acrylic, which I soon passed on to the teenage son of a friend who was interested in trying out kilt wearing.
I recently upgraded again to a full 8-yard model from USA Kilts in 13 oz. Boyd tartan. It is definitely even nicer than the Scotweb model.
So, like Jock, I've got a dressier and more casual kilt, both in the same clan tartan.

Choose anything matching your everyday style and start thinking about the next one.
You'll want to wear it everyday. Then you will notice one is not enough.

At the age of 49 my mum died and she left me a stockpile of documents about my genealogy. After working on this for several months I stumbled upon my father's lineage.
I have a name that originates in the South of France medieval gascony, which I got from tgemai assumed to be my grandfather. He also gave me my first knife at the age of15, much to dismay if my mother.
in the pile were letters from paternal grandmother from her English speaking lover. My gran was married 6 years after my dad was born, andworked for pre war GM/GE GSM-Continental Europe in Antwerp between 1925 and 1930 birth year of my father. My dad was the illegitimate son of her English lover.
Research took years but I eliminated lije 20 out of 24 potential GM expats and ended with 4 candidates 2 in the highest and 2 in the 2nd highest category
the best ranked candidates havibvious links to 🏴, so I decided to get more interested to the point that I wanted to wear a kilt.
out of respect for the family lineage addociayed with clan kilts I've decided to wear Stewart, I started with a hunting Stewart and a utility kilt in black with royal Stewart tartan in the pleads. I want an royal Stert an a black Stewart for more firmal ocassiobs,
all my accessories are based on the Thistle motif

My first kilt was a 5.11 TDK in Multicam. I had always wanted to try a kilt, it was affordable, and the Multicam was a perfect way to compensate for my insecurity in wearing it. Shortly thereafter I picked up a couple of Stumptown kilts. Then this year for my birthday, my wife got me a Casual Kilt from USA Kilts. For that it was just a matter of finding a tartan I liked and rolling with it, I chose Holyrood. Since then I've more-or-less been sucked down the bottomless abyss that is traditional kilting. If I had it to do again, I'd dive in straight to traditional kilting, because of how much I love it. But it's great having a couple of real beater kilts about, and they still hold a fond place in my heart as part of my journey.

As a fellow Laphroaigh enthusiast I certainly applaud your thoughts on wearing a tartan from the area (on a side note I just managed to score 3 bottles of discontinued 18 year old in a very unlikely place) Personally I have a number of different tartans I wear because up until recently I thought I did not have a clan so I have 3 utility kilts 2 tartan kilts one in freedom and one in pride of Scotland and 2 hybrid kilts one in royal stewart and one in pride of Scotland as well as one on order in my wifes tartan (Thomson) and I am going to order one in my newly discovered family of Gordon so yes I do have quite a number of kilts however each has it's purpose. I am actually considering wearing one moose hunting this fall. So I say choose what you feel is this most important to you and just go with it
