But on my way back to the underground station, in band kit and pipes in hand, I was approached by a local matron, who said
"where are you from?"
"Los Angeles."
"I thought so!"
and she harrumphed off. I suppose the implication was that I was a tourist wearing kilts as a costume and carrying bagpipes as a prop, which, having been a piper for 40 years, I resent.

Richard, you should have asked her where she was from,then after she told you, you too should have said I thought so.
It would be very interesting to hear of similar incidents from native or non native kilt wearers while in Glasgow. Maybe it was just a couple of isolated instances and you two were the unlucky recipients.

2007. It rained all day at Bridge Of Allan, rained all day at Glasgow Green for the Worlds, but lovely that day!

Personally as an ordinary civilian, bitter experience tells me, I would not even bother considering wearing the kilt in Glasgow.

I know, how brutal is it? I tend to wear it in Glasgow City Centre even if I am going to wear it, I figure it's the safest option. But as I experienced recently and once in the past, even that has its complications.
