As an aside, any kilt that has much taper in the fell (i.e., the stitched portion of the pleats is wider at the hips than at the top of the kilt) does not roll well. Lay the kilt out flat, wrong side up. Fold the underapon over the pleats, and then fold the apron back on top of the underapron (like you'd wear it but flattened). Fold in half again. Or fold the kilt in half, apron edge to underapron edge, fold in half, and in half again. Either way, slide the folded kilt into a pillowcase (as suggested above). Fold the edges of the pillowcase snug against the kilt, and the pleats will stage in place in your suitcase or even in a duffel bag.

Packing Cube in Carry On Works

I have taken several trips, by air and auto, with kilts. The longest trip was about three weeks from Port Orchard WA to Columbus GA and back. I wore a kilt every day except one, when I wore a suit to a hearing.

I have had great results using large packing cubes for kilts. Fold the kilt in half vertically, lay it into the cube, then fold the flopping-over part up and smooth it out. When you take the kilt out of the bag, the insignificant wrinkles go away before you get a chance to curse them. I usually wear a kilt while driving or suffering on the airlines, and pack one or two, with all the stuff like flashes and hose for each kilt in the associated cube. I have packed the USAK tank (wool), semi-trad (PV), and casuals (PV), with good results. It doesn't much matter which bag you use. I load all my cubes into an Air Boss or Lil Hombre, which have plenty of room for the kilt stuff and a pair of jeans or cargo shorts to wear when getting ice from down the hall in the hotel.

I have yet to travel with the Prince Charlie in the Air Boss or Lil Hombre. I have packed a suit in a cube in the Air Boss using instructions found online - with good results.

I also have a kilt roll, which I am still trying to figure out, big picture-wise.

Hopefully, this will benefit someone who is looking for answers.
