I wear a Sam Browne as a day wear belt. I don't carry a sword or a pistol so the cross strap is essentially useless and remains at home.

Do it...
I use an Instructor belt from Wilderness daily, including with kilts. Note; these are utilities and I don't work in an office but I'm not sure it'd matter. I'd wear something more appropriate for a wedding, for instance.
Kinda reminds me of that Karate Kid scene, where Ralph Machio asks Pat Morita "what (rank) belt are you?".
"J.C. Penny... $2.99".

I think the idea of wearing a piece of former mil kit such as a belt is OK. No different than shoes or boots, and not as if its the uniform itself or Unit insignia. I think some have even de-mil mess jackets to wear with the kilt formally. I had briefly considered it, but the Armour scarlet is just a bit much to tone down.
