I have HOC hose, budget-priced hose from Stillwater Kilts, the khaki What Price Glory hose (both the repro version and the Indian Army surplus model), Sock Dreams cotton hose, and shooting socks. All work fine with my kilt, depending on the outfit and the weather.
Tobus is right that the Sock Dreams hose are not as thick as regular kilt hose, but they are very affordable and the only thing that I've found that works well in humid summer heat. For casual purposes I think they are fine, but I wouldn't wear them with black tie.
