Yep, my ISP used to give us some free storage space and recently canned that program. Before that it was Photobucket, which decided last year to charge a bundle for space they had previously been providing for free, and before that it was Imagestation, which kicked us all off of their system a while earlier. With Dropbox I can post photos, video and music demos - but we'll see how long they last.

I haven't had good luck posting images directly to the forum here in the past, but we'll see if I can get it figured out with the help of the FAQ.

p.s I just mailed a big hunk of this tweed to Barb T. and before long it is likely to result in something really nice.

Thanks for all the replies.

I thought that going with someone experienced with the different weights of the tartan and could source the material would provide a better experience in the time frame I was hoping for than trying to find a seamstress - the only ones I know in town just do alterations.

I was hoping some women might reply that could comment on items like the kilted skirt that Steve posted, as that was what I was initially considering before her mother commented.

I am very sorry, I guess I assumed that you already had the fabric and the pattern, needing only someone to sew it.

Can you tell us what fabric you are trying to source?

And can you show us the design idea?

Are you wanting an A line skirt or a kilted skirt? Or some other type of skirt?
Or to put it another way.. a skirt with pleats or a skirt without pleats?

Pleats- go with a kiltmaker, any decent one will be able to adapt for a woman’s figure and style choices.

No pleats - someone who sews that has lots of experience should be able to handle the job.

The weight of the Tartan isn’t a sewing issue it’s more a design issue... some styles won’t suit a heavy tartan, some styles will need a lining others won’t, etc, etc.

I just did a quick google search.... wow there are a lot of quilts in Saskatoon.

However I found several custom sewing businesses and The Academy Of Fashion Design -they should be able to give you some recommendations.

I’m replying in between watching the cricket (Go Aussies) so this may be slow and/or fragmented.

1) style terms - a kilted skirt has pleats... so forget that term.
2) the pic you linked to is a gored or 1/2 circle skirt.
3) A line is slimmer
4) Belt & waist height/width can all be adjusted easily to suit her preference by any competent dressmaker. Same with length.
5) a competent dressmaker IS needed for pattern matching at the seams.
This step begins laying out the pattern pieces BEFORE cutting.
6) you will need a lot of fabric to match the plaid pattern... check the back of the pattern for fabric requirements.

Here are some suggestions, design suggestions for fabric weight is on the back of the patterns -but I suggest working with the dressmaker before buying anything.

All I know is that she would like an A-line skirt that is a hand above the knee in length.


Her mother thought this design would be nice. It doesn't have to look exactly like this (personally I'm not sold that she would like the higher waist) - if any maker or website sells A-line kilted skirts I'd be happy to take a look - the current options I have seen like the Billie skirts are shorter than what she'd want to wear to work and the kilted skirt that was posted earlier has pleats (which her mother doesn't think she should like)
