Tweed Colour Suggestions.........
I'm at the point where I would like to get a tweed kilt jacket. Mrs. Baeau is planning to create a Black Argylle for me, that's handled. As with many, I've been lurking about eBay, & its offerings, I can mix/match clothing colours as required, with 'modern-ish' clothing. With the kilt, I'm lost. Any thoughts regarding what colour tweed would / would not work with the Johnstone Modern tartan. I would appreciate any suggestions, don't do's, must do's, et cetera.
My thanks to all!
Cheers,
Steve

Part of the beauty of tweed is that it doesn't need to match anything. It's like blue jeans, to use an American style comparison. Nobody ever tries to match the rest of their outfit to blue jeans. Tweed is pretty much the same, at least with most colours and patterns. In fact, the multi-coloured nature of tweed makes it where trying to match would be less than ideal. If you overthink it, you'll end up never finding the right match. And in my opinion, making tweed match a kilt would come off as trying too hard.
With that kilt, I would choose any number of tweed colours and patterns. Browns are lovely.

I think you would be hard pressed to find any tweed that does not work with that tartan. Keep your eyes on eBay and hold out for a quality jacket in your size that falls within your budget. Or contact one of our esteemed Xmarks sponsors if you want one brand new.

I'm with Tobus and Tim on any tweed color goes with your kilt. I might add that a lighter colored jacket would give a more cheerful air than a somber, darker color. Fit your personality with this choice, or give yourself a persona that the public will respond to.

Thank you, gentlemen.
Tarheel, I was thinking lighter. The tartan can look a bit dark. Fitting my personality could be an issue......colour choice for arrested adolescence?
Tim Little, I've my eye on a couple of eBay items. Pending more accurate measurements.
Tobus, overthinking was my concern. That is always too easy to do. I like the comparison to basic blue jeans. I don't remeber a time trying to match shirt or boots, to blue denim.

FWIW - my tank is a MacLeod of Harris and my first tweed was a charcoal Braemar. Mostly because I was able to get it for a good price.
I was looking for a brown Argyll and while scouring eBay, I came across a green Harris Tweed Argyll with real horn buttons and matching waistcoat for a price that was too good to pass up. I love the lighter green tweed with my kilt and it's dramatically different from my sport jackets and suits (mostly blues and greys).

I still want a brown tweed but I'm pretty well covered with the two jackets I have now.
Good luck with your search!

Very nice, Shane! The Lovat green Argyll jacket has long been a popular choice, and it's hard to go wrong with one. It goes with almost every tartan. I recently bought a vintage one very similar to yours, after wanting one for years.
And by the way, Steve (Baeau), it's nice to see someone else with a Johnstone connection! My closest connections are to Clan Colquhoun, but I've got Johnston in the proverbial woodpile some 4 generations back. Still researching that branch...

Texas seems to be a place where many Johnstone/Johnston/Johnson live. My family called Odessa home. Trying to figure out when they got there. The proverbial name change is making it a bit tough. Trivia......my great something grandfather was a school teacher in Odessa, mid-1800's.. I was always worrried to find a horse theif in the family. Instead, great something grandfather saw a wanted poster for a particularly nasty cattle rustler..................with the same name as he. From that moment on, the name became Johnson.

Thanks! I was really excited when I found it on eBay and then saw the measurements were pretty much exactly what I wear. I didn't realize it had actual horn buttons until it arrived which was a nice surprise.
Now whenever I see a different kilt jacket that I like, I feel like I should add one of those to my closet. Unfortunately, I have neither the budget nor space to add all the jackets I like!

Lovat Blue is also a option if you want a lighter tweed, my favourite tweed with any tartan is one of my brown Argyll jackets. They seem to work with everything.
