Why not both? shrug

Okay, let me be clearer: a Highlander or a Cowboy?

Sill could be both, sir. Lots of Scot cattlemen in the American West. On a serious note, I actually don't think the Rodeo type belt buckle would look bad with the thick, kilt belt I have

*from the last: There were exceptions, of course: the so-called Idaho Sheep King, Andy Little, migrated to Idaho from Scotland in 1894, joining other Scottish immigrants to the Pacific Northwest and reflecting a common pattern of foreign ownership and investment in Western pastoralism. Mobility—of owners, herders, and animals—always characterized the industry. Though it was not nearly as famous as the state’s potatoes, the Idaho sheep industry thrived.

Yes, there were a lot of Scottish cattlemen. I don't think they normally wore Highland dress when they were doing their work. Kilts for bulldogging? More than just unlikely, I think.
Do you have a picture of the buckle you're thinking of?

No, I currently down own one of the large, redneck variety, although I'm thinking of one I used to have, a pewter oval with a large Whitetail deer one the front.

I'm sure that would be beautiful. It's probably not Highland in style from your description, and that size/style would fall into the more formal style if it were, but your call. My thought is that while it would be a gorgeous buckle, with a kilt it'll be neither fish nor fowl.
But then, it's rugby.

Yes, I have an official Macron Scotland Rugby shirt in "3XL" and it's a bit snug of a USA 2XL.
I've not tried a Macron 4XL but I'm guessing that it would fit more or less like a standard USA 2XL.
Buy up two sizes like you say.

The rodeo buckles I've seen are made to fit on ordinary belts you would wear with jeans. Are some made to work with 2" to 2.5" belts?
My jeans have loops that appear to be designed for a 1.5" belt.
My narrower Scottish belt is a Day Dress belt, 2" wide, and it won't fit in the loops.
The 2.5" Dirk Belt wouldn't have a chance of fitting in my jeans.
Then again, back in the late 1960s/early 1970s ordinary fashion belts were super-wide and pants had loops to match.
Now hats are a different matter! And have been worn with kilts for over 100 years.

Is one of those choices (in either statement) supposed to be a pejorative?
Seriously, if I asked you whether you'd rather look like a Scot or a Canadian, how would that sound to you? Or to be clearer, a Highlander or a Canuck, eh?
Outside a handful of people who are current/former members of this forum, nobody in my personal circle of acquaintances would know what a Scottish buckle looks like. And a Texan/cowboy belt buckle ... that looks like a normal belt buckle to them. I'm much more concerned with "Does this look good?" rather than "Does this look Scottish?" or "Does this look Texan?"
And for the sake of clarification, I mean "Does this look good to the people who will be seeing it today?" My decision takes into account the fashion sensibilities of the people I'm around.
If people don't wear that type of buckle for casual, smart casual, or sporty wear in Scotland, that's useful information ... just in case I decide to wear a kilt the next time I'm in Scotland. In Texas, it's not generally altering my sartorial decisions.
