    Kilt Drawers

Years ago when you had a kilt made by some kilt makers they would include a pair of lined drawers, cut and sewn from the same tartan, with your kilt. At this moment on Ebay there is auction for a few items of highland dress for a child, included in this auction are a pair of tartan under drawers. The items are all quite nice and don’t appear to be in too bad of shape for their age.

I cannot recall in the dim and distant past when these items were provided with the new kilt, that any of my kilt drawers were lined!

Aren’t these a pair of kids ’shorts’ (i.e. ’short trousers’) with an old fashioned button fly?

(Looking more closely, I think the buttons would be behind a flap if they were outerwear).

I had a kilt passed on to me as a child that had belong to one of the uncles when he was younger, it came with a pair of drawers in the matching tartan that were lined with a plain cotton fabric. I had assumed it was to prevent itching and make them a bit more durable.

    We have been here before!
Kilt (under)trews, usually lined, were automatically supplied with all kilts (adult or child) up until about 1950 and could still be specially ordered up until about 1990. Here are some experiences of boys growing up in Scotland in the first part of last century (where it asks you to "sign in" just click "cancel"). A considerable variety of experiences and sometimes conflicting opinions.

If anyone has photos of the young boy’s bodice kilts, I would like to see them.
