Day Wear

For a topic perhaps less controversial than wedding attire I'm also assembling my first day wear outfit that will be worn to a Daughters of the British Empire afternoon tea next month. The hostess is quite pleased I'll be kilted and so is my wife.

I've got a 13 ounce Scottish National kilt on the way that I plan to wear with a navy blue tweed jacket, navy waistcoat, shirt and tie. I also have a kilt pin. I have a black leather sporran, green hose, and will wear either black wingtips or black oxfords. I need to pick up flashes and will finish things off with a stag handle sgian dubh.

I know the sgian dubh is optional, but the only time I'm without a knife is when I'm somewhere like a federal building that forbids them. Being new to this but trying hard to get it right what have I missed?

You are nearly alright with your attire. Although a green tone, or brown tone jacket and waistcoat(if necessary) might be a better choice as blue is rather loud. The SD should only be poking out of the hosetop by an inch or so , so nothing too large or ostentatious. So bearing the pictures below in mind, you sound good to go with what you have. Oh one more thing, don't buy tartan flashes!

Something like this is worth remembering. Lounge/business suit equivalent. Standard, non formal, wedding attire.

Much appreciated Jock! The jacket and vest are a dark, subdued blue, not at all bright so hopefully they'll suffice. I was very picky about the color as that's what was on clearance

In all seriousness, however, I think the dark blue will compliment the tartan quite well. Once the kilt arrives we'll see if I have extra shopping to do.

I think you’ve got a good outfit going on there. I’ll second Jock’s suggestion of not wearing tartan flashes and also recommend the self tie garters made by house of cheviot.

A stag sgian dubh would be a nice addition for a day outfit but as it’s optional you can wait on that until you find one you really like.

I think your definitely looking in the right direction and hope you post some pictures when you get it all together.

Thanks for the help! I've got a sgian dubh on the way from Sheffield...when there's an excuse for me to buy a new knife there's really nothing optional about it, lol.

Yes. What you said. Since I was seven; 67 years of carrying one or more, feel naked without Sgian in hose, pocket knife in sporran, credit card blade in money clip.

Another vote for garter ties. Claret hose work with almost any tartan (see Jock' photos); garter ties that pick up a minor color in the tartan or your shirt or tie can be quite nice. With that tartan I myself might put purple hose with claret garter ties. The purple combines the blue and the red in the tartan without overloading the eye with one color, the claret blends well with
no calling attention to itself. Others will laugh or disagree; it's one of my favorite things about this forum.

It's been a very busy week since our Daughters of the British Empire afternoon tea last Saturday but I thought it was worth posting a picture. I'm in Scottish National tartan and we were a big hit at the event. My wife liked the look and was kind enough to wear a matching sash. Our good friend, the hostess, was happy to earn bonus points for having guests in tartan and I've since been informed that I am now officially requested to serve as an escort at their annual Christmas tea this year. Many thanks to everyone for your advice and all the helpful threads I've read here over time. There were several UK natives at the event, all of whom seemed to find the outfit properly done.
