    What is this tartan?

    I am a physicist. I'd like a tartan appropriate to my calling. It turns out, the first color photograph ever made was of a tartan ribbon.

    Given the date and the popularity of tartan at the time, it was probably a fashion sett rather than a clan type tartan.
