Most Casual Daywear
Dear Rabble,
My family and I had our annual album photoshoot done recently. This is the first year that I wore the kilt for our photos (last year I wore a bonnet and trousers). This is my new Tewksbury kilt with solid Cheviot hose with contrasting cuff from USAKilts, brown Ferguson Britt sporran with MOD cantle, T-shirt and waxed cotton field jacket/Mackinaw vest. I might have worn a polo shirt or buttoned shirt for these photos, but I didn’t. This is my “stomping around the farm” Highlandwear.

Our photographer was somewhat enamoured of the kilt outfit—this is frequently the case with people of artistic temperament, in my experience! Some of the photos therefore look like they were plucked from a House of Cheviot catalogue.

There has always been four conflicting views on highland wear.
The first is that the kilt is working wear. Normal, everyday clothing that adapts as needed to the weather and the task at hand.
Others take their inspiration from the military or pipers uniforms.
Others try to harken back to a time seen in photos and illustrations from the Victorian era.
And others view the kilt as part of a historical or even Ren Faire costume.
This seems to be a very good interpretation of the first. Well done.

Nice family photos! Thanks for sharing.
I’d like to see a close-up photo of that sporran. It looks like an MOD cantle on the leather bag, with horse hair tassels and gilt comes.
That’s an interesting combination. I’d be curious to hear the story behind it.
Thanks,
SM

Great shots. Great outfit. I sent a link to Lamar, as he is not often on the forum these days and I know he'll enjoy seeing his sporran in the wild.

Thanks, Steve. The first interpretation has always been mine, with the caveat that one could indeed wear various jackets and ties to dress up if the occasion called for it. I’ve sometimes encountered frank disbelief that I could possibly be wearing the kilt in the absence of a particular “dressy event”, or festival, or something.
