I can relate. I'm 55 years old, and aging faster by the minute.
No, there are no pleats stitched, though one could certainly sew in belt loops and simply tie it with some parachute cord or a belt (which is probably what Highlanders did anyway - no one had 5 meters or clean dry grass to take their time putting clothing on). They almost certainly used belt loops to get the pleats, as can be seen in one of the historical paintings.
I've done this often enough now (having owned and tested 4 different great kilts) that I can get one laid out, pleated, and belted on in about 4 or 5 minutes. It's gotten quite easy. And quite comfortable. One just needs that flat dry area to spread it out on. And yes, the physical ability to lay down and wrap it around.
I wonder how many years this will still be easy. But I promise some pics from my next Games, which is in a month. I'll bring two great kilts to that one
