As pointed out above Hunting Stewart is a special case due to the red and yellow lines alternating across an otherwise symmetrical tartan.

Black Watch-based military kilts with one or more light overstripes are generally pleated to them, so that Gordon shows a yellow line on each pleat and Seaforth MacKenzie shows a white line on each pleat.

But on Hunting Stewart pleating to either the red or yellow means massively deep pleats and a vast amount of tartan being swallowed up in them, thus the alternating pleating to both the red and yellow lines.

On my Hunting Stewart (weathered) kilt I decided to have the pleats alternate between a brown line in the grey area and a brown line in the black area, which creates an impression of half as many pleats as there actually are.
