    Owners of Scotland Shop Tartans

    Good day, folk.

While looking for my first kilt (belted plaid), I've been coming back to scotlandshop.com because they have a generous price per yardage and a large selection of tartans. I'm wanting to go for their 14oz wool at $42/y. I'd love to hear your guy's thoughts on their product(s). Thanks a ton.

14oz strikes me as too light.

Usually the weight per yard is 13oz or 16oz. I would find where the tartan was woven. There may be some issues with the selvage or other issues with the material

I looked again and read it had a width of 30 some inches, so now I've decided 13oz.

On their site I saw 46 pounds for the 14oz wool.

They don't state the weavers of their various weight/price categories, but the Irish tartans and Hebridean tartans are both woven by House of Edgar and I see that these are considerably higher in price.

Which makes me wonder who weaves the 14oz wool.

Likewise the "peat" kilt jacket looks House of Edgar, but the "moss" kilt jacket looks Lochcarron.

The Welsh Tartan Center makes 14 oz cloth, but that's probably not of interest.

The last time I looked into this, the Welsh Tartan Center (aka the Wales Tartan Center) doesn't make their own as such. Their Welsh tartans are sourced from the Cambrian Woollen Mill in Powys; they are "fashion" designs they commissioned, though, so I guess it's not wrong to say they make them. The others they supply - Scottish, Irish, etc. - come from the usual suspects in Scotland. (I believe USA Kilts sources most of their Welsh tartans from WTC or direct from Cambrian, although their Welsh National comes from House of Edgar I think.)

I've ordered belted plaids from them several times.

Yes, their Hebridean line is House of Edgar. They may list it as 14oz, but I believe its' 13oz. It's definitely HoE. I bought 4 yards of it (double-width) in MacLeod, and have worn it a few times. Nice wool.

They're about the cheapest place I know to buy UK mills raw fabric online.
