I would use terminology like that to describe myself. One branch of the roots leads back to Scotland (presumably Fife). Other branches of the roots lead to other places. The tree is American.

Exactly so. Very occasionally I have need to think about my roots--------- Scots(Sutherland,Inverness-shire,Moray), English(Gloucestershire, Worcestershire,Staffordshire,Herefordshire), Australian(Victoria), French(Norman),German------------- and perhaps/probably others that I can't recall or, are unknown, so I prefer to call myself British. I simply can't be bothered to split hairs over my possible historical past.
