[QUOTE=OC Richard;1413394]The Setts Of The Scottish Tartans (sorry Peter) says this:
This design appears in early collections and was recorded by Logan (1831) and Smibert (1850) yet according to the Smiths (1850) the correct tartan of the MacLeods was MacKenzie.Logan was aware of this widely held opinion but deplored it. /QUOTE]
The MacKenzie attribution was based on the fact that the son of the Earl of Cromarty held the titular title Lord MacLeod. It had nothing to do with the clan of the same name. The then Lord MacLeod was responsible for founding the 78th Ross-shire Regt, later the Seaforth Highlanders, who wore MacKenzie, hence the Smiths' error.
Here's a pieces of Wilsons' cloth from c.1830 which they simply called MacLeod.
