I’m new to kilts, wondering what type of shirt goes well with a great kilt. Definitely not a fan of the Jacobite type shirts sold and aimed at kilt wearers. What is historically accurate? Thank you in advance.

It all depends on if you're approaching the breacan-an-feileadh as part of an historical outfit, or as part of a modern Highland outfit.

Historically, we have to face the fact that nothing akin to the modern "Jacobite shirt" existed at any time in the past.

Here's a couple photos of actual 18th century shirts, the sort that would have been worn with the breacan-an-feileadh when it was in current widespread use. These fastened with a single button at the neck. There were no lace-up shirts.

A while back I did a little bit of research trying to find out where the idea of the modern "Jacobite shirt" came from.

It was soon obvious that it originated in Hollywood, whose costumers loved putting their stars in lace-up shirts, dresses, vests, etc in any sort of "historical" (ahem, ahem) film.

But where did Hollywood get the idea for lace-up shirts? They didn't exist historically.

The only thing I did find was the 19th century American baseball shirt, though that's a leap perhaps.

I’m looking to base my outfit on the battle of Culloden time period. I had family on both sides of the battle. I’ve found a shirt very similar to what you posted. As well as a replica Culloden jacket. I very much love history, and want to reflect that in my outfit. Living history at Highland Games, Celtic fests, and renfaires. As much as my budget allows at least lol.
