    ordering fabric length

I am planning to make kilts for my grand kids. Im almost finished reading Barbaras book but im unsure as to how much fabric to order for the boys. They average 21 1/2 inch waist and the fabric will be double wide. Any suggestions? Thanks.

It depends on the tartan's warp sett size, how you're pleating the kilts, how many pleats each kilt will have, how much reveal each pleat will have, how you're doing the apron/pleat splits, how much extra fabric you want to hide in the deep pleats for alterations, and how much extra fabric you want to purchase as a safety net in case you get it laid out and realize your plan needs to be tweaked.

I'm afraid I'm not talented enough to give an estimate, but hopefully someone with greater experience and skill can chime in. Worst case scenario, you realize you didn't buy enough fabric even after increasing the reveal of the pleats, and you have to adjust your splits by sacrificing a couple pleats. It's not the end of the world and will still look lovely.

It depends on which tartan and what weight?

I'm working on the math now, but the problem is that I don't know the sett. I will probably use either Pride of Scotland or Scottish Heritage, as they are both close to our family tartan.
