No, that leather bit is supposed to go though the tab on the back of the sporran. In the photo, the chain is extremely off center. If you look at the chain and leather strap at the back and imagine centering them, you'll notice that leather tab would end up behind the sporran where it should be.

Ok. That makes sense. The pic was also giving the illusion that the chain was longer on one side which was adding to the wonkiness.

This listing is ludicrous, $475 for a 1960s WE Scott seal Evening sporran with a huge tear in the front of the fur.

In perfect nick it might sell for half that.

As it stands it might sell for a tenth of that to somebody just wanting the cantle.

They were asking the same price then, so it seems they aren't even reducing the price as it fails to sell. Maybe I should tear up some of my sporrans and post them for ten times their original value 🤣
