How about I come up and we track him down together. Two men in kilts should really get him going Then he will know for sure it is a Government Conspiacy started in Tasmanian to hijack all his heritage.

As stated else where I really feel sorry for his wife.

In all seriousness maybe you should ask him to have a wee dram with you so he will learn not to judge so qhickly...which I might say is a very common fault in our society these days.

    See you Saturday.

    Howdy Daz,

Just curous in what way JPG has hijacked the kilt, and what makes you think the kilt is associated in anybody's mind with homosexuality? Do you really think JP's designs (which I do not like :x and would not be caught dead wearing)are what make people question a kilted man's sexuality? If a straight designer had been inspired by the kilt would he also have hijacked it? Have rugby fans highjacked it...or is it ok if they have, cause then people will think you're a rugby fan too? The basic problem is that people might think you are gay? Hmmmmmm, I dunno, I would love to welcome you with open arms to the forum, but I fear you'd think I was making a pass at you!

from what little I've seen of Jean paul gautier, his designs bear no resemblance to kilts, they are truly skirts!

We Scots have never been much on social graces...obviously, I grew up in a family of Scotsmen, mostly grouchy, always critical, and not afraid to lead with an insult. Took on the nasty habits myself...

Got so "sick" of putting up with the grouchiness I got to HATE going to Highland games because so many folks looked like my kin.

Been a while. Headed down to the Arizona Highland Games in a couple weeks. Think I can stand it. Wearing my Kathy's Kilt Macdonald of the Isles Tartan tank, but don't have all the "accessories" so I'm sure I'll be criticized by someone for something...just too big a gathering of Scots for it not to happen.

My planned response to insults, if any, is an eyelocking, but polite, "Fu*k You"

Hopefully, I'll have a good time and my kinsmen will keep their opinions to themselves....hah.....

    Highland games...

    Ron,

Most folks who attend Highland Games are not that way...you always have a few bad ones everywhere, and I'm not saying that Highland games are an exception, but most folks (and I'm speaking from the POV of the Clan Tent people) are understanding when you're starting to collect pieces of "kilt kit" -- and the vendors won't be hostile at all! <grin>

    I think you'll be surprised. (I hope!)

    Cheers,

    Todd

Well Ron, I guess that explains a lot, maybe the weather plays a role too, sunshine tends to may you happy, it didn't work in the case of the couple I met, but most scots I've met here have been warm and friendly.

One lady in particular, she's a widow in her 60's, a teacher of SCD, and so fully of energy and enthusiasm, always has a kind or encouraging word.

I like to think of her as a good example of a scot.

Here is a little trick I learned from a waitress friend.

When she'd have customers who were a real pain in the butt, and left a lousy tip, she smile ever so big and say, "F**k you very much and y'all come again real soon." 90% of the time folks though she was saying "Thank you."

I'm not sure aggression will do a whole lot of good. Education seems the better route.

Interestingly enough, when I contacted the Clan NacNaughton folks, they were delighted to hear from me and we exchanged a couple of e-mails. However, as soon as I mentioned 4-yard poly-viscose kilts in the clan tartan, the correspondance stopped.

I'd think no more of it if it happened once, but it happened twice. Odd. I suppose three times' a charm or something so I won't read too much into it. We'll see when I visit the tent at the next Games I attend.

    reactions...

    Alan,

Remember that many folks who represent Clan Societies today are relatively "older" and may not be aware of all of the new trends in kilts these days -- they may not have understood what a 4-yd. PV kilt is, or they may have misunderstandings about it that can be cured by actually seeing it in person.

    Cheers,

    Todd
