No need to regret wearing trousers-for oddly it promotes the kilt better than wearing one all the time.
For it shows we are normal men wearing a normal garment as a part of a balanced wardrobe: rather than eccentrics to be ignored as not representative of men in general.
The ideal will be when a man can without needing/wanting to prove anything look in their wardrobe in the morning and decide to wear a kilt or trousers according to mood and what they are doing that day.
Or if wanting a new suit for work-will get one with both a kilt and trousers for the lower half. In other words when it is an entirely normal garment to be worn/not worn without a second thought.
After all who wants to be trapped-be it in trousers or a kilt--it is really about choice: and as you rightly say on a cold day the kilt is the best choice-but for other activities/occasions it might not be.
