I've worn a kilt with a Hawaiian shirt a time or two. Always a solid color kilt, and I wore it with sandals -- no hose. I wore the shirt tucked in, but loosely, so it still hung loose on me, while at the same time not hiding the kilt.

People always got a smile seeing the combo...
