I've never worn a chain on a sporran, they are fine in pipe bands, but not for everyday wear.
Graham, spot on!
(Oh dear, here I go again!).... When I was a lad!! the only time anyone wore a chain/strap on their sporran was on an evening dress, silver and sealskin sporran. All day-sporrans came with, and were worn with, plain leather straps.
To this day, I really dislike seeing (let alone, wearing) chains with day-sporrans. My Buzz Kidder chain went straight into the odds-and-ends box in my garage to be recycled later!!
