Sorry to be a tire kicker here...
I think I'd be leaving the kilts at home. In that environment any garment must be considered sacrificial. The end score in reality... the kilt didn't fair any better than the jeans. I can't see 'practical' in this equation. What's practical about
1. risking having an unplanned weenee roast from heat and corrosive gasses. and 2. the destruction of one relatively expensive UK. the cost of which would buy several pairs of jeans
My guess is that this was done as a stunt or some kind of product test or promotion.
I see a future for the kilt.
I doubt that this kilt has a future beyond a display case somewhere.

No, not a stunt, just a show about volcanos. Get your eyes checked. And I don't think PBS does product placement. At least I hope so.
When the really dangerous moments came, they wore a reflective suit. Most of the time, they were just out on simi hardened lava flows looking for hot spots to collect samples.
This guys pecker was never in any serious danger. He wasn't crawling about an active lava flow while kilted.
Whatever though. I saw the show. It was interesting. Sorry you missed it.

They can't, because they are federally funded as a non-profit agency. What you saw there was pure, unadulterated kilt wearing in action.
I wanted to see that show, but had too much homework to do, and missed it. I'd have made time if I'd known there'd be kilted scientists!

May be why they never had a clear shot of this guy's backside, so as to not show off the logo of the kilt he was wearing.

Washed the survival kilt this weekend with a little softener and then tumble air dried it and it made a HUGE difference! This is a great tip!

Don't forget that UK refuses to pay for product placement, anyone wearing their product on TV is purely doing so on their own.
