I do that with 'kilt' (with a k) far too often, since it's a word I use on a daily basis. I live in fear that one of these days I won't catch the typo in some important business communication! Worst of all would be to have it in an email to a customer...'Your new **** should be ready by next week...' A good reason to use spell-checker!
I was recently at a trade show where the Collinses of the Welsh Tartan Centre were exhibiting. I noticed that kilt was spelt with a 'k' on the poster in from of their stall, so when I stopped there, I remarked on it. Tony Collins said it was so people would know what they were talking about! Maybe also so they won't get double-takes when the mind transposes letters to a more familiar word -- ?!? Though I suppose, from an advertising standpoint, that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing!
