I wasn't sure where this topic might go, so here it is. I just thought this might be of interest to most here. The link below is an article on modesty (the site is a Catholic one); however, if you scroll down the article, there is a good section on kilts, traditional garb of men, and where pants came from. That section is called: Skirts, breeches, and trousers. The quote next to the guy in the kilt is mine. That section is a very good defense of the use of the kilt, in my opinion.

That was interesting!

While I abhor the use of the word 'skirt' in reference to a kilt by people today, I have looked up the Biblical references regarding the OT priests and skirts.

I've said before that when church people look on my kilt disapprovingly I remind them that the Lord didn't wear trousers!

The title in that section now has the word "kilt" added, as well as using the word "kilt" in the introduction to my little quote. Your comments were most helpful. It will be more clear now that a kilt is not a skirt, which was the whole point of that portion of the article.

Actually, I have a bad habit of making some of my comments so brief that the meaning I wish to convey is lost.

No, Graham, that was not the case. I knew what you were saying. What you said simply put the idea in my mind that the word "kilt" should be mentioned in the title of that sub-section. That's why I asked my friend to make the little changes.

The most ancient form of the skirt is noted first in Ancient Egypt as male dress. In Mode of Costume, R. Turner Wilcox notes, "The first and principle garment of men was the schenti, or loin cloth, which was a long scarf wrapped around the hips and held in place by a tied belt or girdle."

I hadn't noticed this reference before in the article, but when I read it just a few minutes ago, it reminded me of something I saw on a broadcast of the 1995 Edinburgh Military Tattoo that a friend of mine in Queensland taped for me off the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Co.) -- There was an Egyptian Army pipe band at the Tattoo that year, and they were wearing a modified version of this particular garment, along with other "kit" to give an "ancient Egyptian" appearance to the pipe band.
