Well, considering how much some people like retro-look clothes, I suppose it's a matter of prestige for some people to have actual clothes from the period. Instead of old, they call them vintage. Another instance of brilliant marketing to the gullible. I don't have anything against people buying these things - to each his own. However, I wouldn't buy something just because it was old. It would have have to either be better quality or have some actual historical significance. For instance, some antique furniture is sturdier than the modern particle-board junk.
Actually, vintage can jsut mean used, not necessarily old. People often like "vintage" clothing over thrift shops because it doesn't have the negative connotation that goes along with it (ie: lack of money) and therefore "vintage shops can charge much more because they're not used, they're "vintage". Sorry, it's all the rage for folks my age right now, I find it a bit of a hash.
Vintage is a word used to charge people more money than what something is worth.
Vintage is a word used to make the "Hollywood" types OK with buying used items. I find that with a certain mindset, something isn't worth anything unless it costs too much.....
Vintage is a word that should be reserved for wines, and perhaps a few other potent potables....
