I agree that you did the right thing. It reminds me of an old joke. Two men meet and start talking. They discover they are both Christians and greet each other with "Praise the Lord, Brother." Then one asks if the other is a Baptist, and when they discover they are both Baptists, they say "Praise the Lord, Brother." But are you a Convention Baptist? Yes. Praise the Lord, Brother. Do you follow the findings of the fourth council of 1357? Yes. Praise the Lord, Brother. But do you accept the third protocol adopted by the fourth council? Yes. Praise the Lord, Brother. This goes on and on until they find some small area of theological dispute, at which they respond "Die you heretic!"

Some people just can't take yes for an answer.

    NOT regimental in the band

Greetings MacHummel! Indeed you responded properly to this poor maladjusted individual. Though unofficially mandated, I do require that ALL members of our band dress "modestly," if you catch my meaning, for we feature as many women in our band as we do men, and youngsters as well. I believe it to be the best policy to avoid any and all embarrassing situations by compromising this one minor aspect of traditional kilt-wearing in the interest of our band. It seems that you are wise and thoughtful to take in consideration others when wearing the kilt, for whether we like it or not, this garment can make it tricky at times to maintain modesty. And does it strike anyone else as simply downright rude to ask such a question? I find this to be no less offensive as asking a female stranger if she is wearing panties. But maybe that's just me.

And everyone, I apologize, but please understand that I will talk about my band a great deal, seeing as I spend more time with my them than I do my own family. Hopefully you will all come to tolerate it. ;)

    Unhappy Rant reply

    Hello all,

sorry to make my first post here a negative one but I felt I had to make a few points in reply to MacHummel's tale.

Firstly, it's barely comprehensible that anyone thinks they have a right to make an underwear enquiry to a stranger, a crime made worse by the opposite genders of the two participants in this bizarre scenario, not to mention the old harridan's reported indignation.

Secondly, can you imagine how society would interpret MacHummel's motives if he were to stroll round downtown Fergus politely interviewing randomly selected females on their choice of underwear on that particular day and offering approval or condemnation as the mood took him. I doubt if we'd see any postings from him for a while.

As a Scot (albeit living in England) I'm appalled by those people (usually Scottish), who've bought and read 'How to deliver unsolicited
kilt and Scottish related advice to complete strangers for dummies). If nothing else it's plain rude. All things considered, I think
MacHummel's approach was pretty good - but I'm not sure I'd even enter into a discussion on the subject with an someone quite
clearly a few tassles short of a sporran. There are any number of friendly replies to friendly questions but to be so personal is quite offensive...........right, I'm well out of breath here.

Sorry for the rant, nice to 'meet' you all

    all the best

    Hi MacHummel,

I sure know the interest a kilt can make. Most people have a compliment, others curiosity (on tartan choise or family lineage) but the other 50% (mostly women) just have to ask the question. Are you or are you not.
I much prefer talking about my family tartans or history than weather i'm commando or not. If I went up to a lady and asked if she was sporting panties under her skirt I would probably be slapped or thrown out.

A lot of older Scots tell me I can't wear the Royal Stuart (why not!) but they don't care if I wear underware and certainly don't get offended if I am.

You handeled this well. It would be easy to tell this hag right where to get off. Some people just aren't worth the time. It takes a bigger person to walk away.
See you at your Stag and Doe
