I know I will! LOL
Not being the only kilted gent in the southeast quadrant of Denver!
Another option that I have just thought about, is to get a Bolo tie (can buy for a lot of money at the airport), but then again it still is a tie, never mind.

I used to hate ties too until I figured out that my shirt collars were
too tight.......duh!
If wearing a tie is uncomfortable, buy a shirt with a larger neck size
that feels fine buttoned up. Simple as that. Be very careful not to
shrink them when you wash them! I hang mine on a hanger to dry
or you could have them dry-cleaned of course.
Graham, wear whatever YOU want. Be yourself. Be comfortable. Nobody
will care and if they do, screw 'em. I wish I lived closer to where you'll
be. It would be lovely to meet you man.
Cheers,

why ties...

How does wearing a tie show respect... I really want to see somebody answer that.
All clerical (and by extension lay) garb when acting in office of a religious organization is expected to convey the identity of the office and duties. Wearing a habit, collar, white shirt/tie, choir robe, etc. all show that your interest is the work/ministry you perform rather than self-expression. This is why we have uniforms in the military as well. UNI (one, all the same) FORM (shape). It says to the person you serve that you have set your own interests aside in order to take on the office and represent the people/organization/god of that office.
All professionals (those who PROFESS an oath when they take on their vocation, eg. doctors, lawyers, judges, clerics) were at one time required to wear distiguishing garb. Hence the white wigs and robes of judges, nurses' white hats, university professor's robes, etc.
I live in the conservative part of the west (and Denver/Colorado Springs are conservative... it's Boulder where we Bohemians hang!) and I agree w/ Doc H. that a coat/tie would be appropriate; they can always be removed. As for the kilt, I would wear it if I were not officiating with the caveat that it would be okay regardless if it were part of my function (representing Scotish Rite, etc.) Just my 2 cents and some rambling. All in all, this IS the small stuff, ya know.

Ties are descended from the neck-cloths of the 18th century, which were survivals of a cloth wrap simply intended to protect your neck from sword cuts! So wear your tie proudly as a piece of armor. Just think how much safer you are with it on...!

Bah! You pansies! Neck tie armor.
Fight bare chested like men! Let your rage be your armor! Let your fury be known on the battlefield.

You fight bare-chested if you want! When the sword blades start whirling, I want my chain-mail and neck-tie in place...!
Oh, yeah... a targe, too!

I still don't see the point of neckties.
Maybe a decorative hemp choker or something. Something nice. Classy looking. With beads. Nice beads. Something that shows craftsmanship, work, and clever design.
But a mere rag tied around my neck? No sir.

One man's rag is another man's... well, hemp choker. If it's functionality that one looks for in evaluating a piece of clothing, then it's likely that both a neck tie and a hemp choker fail that test. If it's "something nice. Classy looking," then it's just a matter of subjective opinion.

Oh, I am not even saying I would wear that.
But if I did wear something around my neck, I think I would shoot for something a bit more artistic.
But I would wear a torc around my neck in an instant.
