Closet Hangers
No, this isn't some message about coming out of the closet regarding my hangers.....and get your mind out of the gutter...
it's about storing kilts. I'm using regular old pants hangers, and the problem is that they pull the pleats all kittywhompus around the buckles/straps because I have to fold the waistband over in thirds.. After hanging for a couple of weeks I have to re-iron the pleats around the sides of my hips or they look like the dickens. I even have a kilt-hanger from Stillwater, and what it is, is just an old fashioned pants hanger.
I don't have room to store them all laid out flat, which would be ideal, I think. They're gonna have to live in the closet. I *THINK* that an old fashioned pants hanger
like this: http://www.alwaysbrilliant.com/aa/aa...nt_Hangers.htm
only with the pieces of wood about 14-16 inches long instead of 8 would do it, but I've never seen such a thing. Anybody got any solutions out there?

Here's the thing. My waist is 40 inches so the wasitband length of these kilts is about 60 inches.. Folding the kilt in thirds means that the folded-over length is about 20 inches. Using a kilt hanger like what you put in that link...12 inches, still leaves the end unsupported......and the pleats go *sag*. It's a lot better than what I've got now, though.
I might have to take apart an old fashioned pair of pants hangers and make my own kilt hangers from 1-by wood stock, and 20-inch long wood parts to hold them up properly..

I got something similar from Ikea a few years ago, and they work quite well.

I have one of those clamp hangers, probably no longer than yours.
Upon the advice of my kiltmaker, I fold the kilt in half(inside out), then fold it in half, again. There are about 2 inches unsupported on each end, but it does not sag and the pleats fall perfect every time.

I got two skirt hangers at the dollar store ($1 each). They are wooden, have two sliding clips each and are the same width as normal coat hangers. With the kilt folded inside out and in thirds, the whole thing is supported by the four clips of the two hangers side by side. I don't find that the pleats get out of whack, or that there is too much unsupported kilt at either end. The thing is to use two hangers for one kilt; it works for me. Hope this helps,

I have those old fashion cedar pants hangers about 10" long, they work great!

Virtually all the kilts in my Kilt Kollection hang on these wooden 'clamps'. Until very recently they were available in the British 'John Lewis' stores in both 12" and 16" lengths, but now only the 12" ones are sold, which are pretty useless for kilts stored as they are worn, in thirds! When I questioned the department Managers in both the Edinburgh and London branches of 'John Lewis' about the non-availability of the longer hangers, I was told that there simply was insufficient demand for them. Had I known they were to have been discontinued, I'd have bought all their existing stock!! Another advantage of this style of hanger is that the bars can be fed through the belt loops of the kilt before being clamped tight, thereby securing even the heaviest kilt.
Now I am reduced to using the metal hangers - sturdy bars with strongly sprung grips at either end. However, these are barely strong enough to take the weight of a genuine, 8 yard x 16oz kilt, and certainly will not hold most of my leather kilts!
Following the "X Marks..." tartan and the "X Marks..." kilt pin, perhaps an "X Marks..." kilt hanger should be the next accessory to be offered! ;)

Alan, I would suggest that you do not try to store your kilts "laid out flat". Pleated garments need to be hung, especially heavy ones.

Try this, I've used it for other things. Take the two skirt hangers, (what are they, 6-8 inches long?) even out the distance on the kilt. Now, hang those two hangers onto a regular strong hanger, the kind with the hooks in the corner, so that the skirt hangers are kept in place by the hook/stop things.
