    Exactly!!!

Spot on, Bubba!! This has been my argument as well. The "puir bluidy infantry" with a bayonet and some guts behind it wins the wars, not the unmanned drones or smart-bombs.

Current methods of warfare require smaller fast moving units, not large units that are large slow targets. Battles aren't head to head open field confrontations anymore. Using choppers isn't even that much of an advantage for moving troops either. Rapid ground movement is the key and you ain't gonna get any large unit moving very fast. This ia what happens when you put bean counters in charge. Anyone remember MacNamara and his wiz kids?

May he be roasting in hell as we speak!!

He's the idiot that saddled us with the bloody M-16!

Bad enough that General LeMay thought they were a good idea for AP's, but then MacNamara had to issue the things wholesale to the entire military establishment!

I wonder how many good men have died over the last 40 years because they shot an enemy with a varmint bullet?

Damn MacNamara and his bloody M-16 poodle-shooter!!

Actually, Stoners Armalite design was a damned good one. Then the bean counters struck. They cheapened the materials in the reciever, eliminated the plating in the chamber and pushed it as not needing cleaning so no cleaning kits were issued with them. Their penny pinching got guys killed while they saved maybe 30 cents per rifle. As if all that wasn't bad enough, Stoners design called for the high grade powder in the ammo that burned fairly clean with high velocity and Mac and the boys changed that to burn the old ball powder which fouled the chamber and bore faster than hell.

Yep, lots of men died with their rifles jammed from powder fouling.

And even now, some have died because they shot a terrorist with a varmint bullet and it didn't stop him.

That is why the military is moving toward a new 6.8mm cartridge. To bad they don't have enough sense to return to the .30 caliber.

    Argylls

Getting back "on topic", here is the most recent example of the Scottish regiment's bravery under fire:

    http://www.calgaryhighlanders.com/argyllnews.htm

Reminds me of one the best bits of dialogue from "Zulu":

Colour Sgt. Bourne: Sir, sentries report the Zulus have gone. All of them. It's a miracle.
Lt. Chard: If it's a miracle, Colour Sergeant, it's a short chamber Boxer-Henry point-four-five caliber miracle.
Sgt. Bourne: And a bayonet, sir, with some guts behind it.

    Cheers,

    Todd

Men of Harlech stop your dreaming
Can't you see their spear points gleaming
    See their warrior pennants streaming
    To this battle field

Men of Harlech stand ye steady
It cannot be ever said ye
For the battle were not ready
    Stand and never yield

Did you know, btw, that this particular version of "Men of Harlech" was written specifically for the movie?

    Okay, back on-topic now.

Some people don't realize that there is more to being in the military, and fighting in the military than dollars....or pounds will buy. If money were IT, then Westminster should go hire a bunch of broke African mercenaries, pay them two dollars a day, buy them new uniforms (polyester) and just THINK of all the money they will save.
