    Proper attire

OK now I have my traditional style SW in the Irish National and JUST got my cullodeen shirt. Is it proper to wear a fly plaid and brooch on the shirt or would i need to get a jacket. Keep in mind i am not financialy able to get a brian boru or argyle jacket. My shirt is like a natural oatmeal color, should i get socks the same color?

Just don't wear the "culloden" shirt with a jacket. Not a good look. A regular dress shirt and tie will look much better.

In terms od hose, they may look good if they too are an oatmel colour, or the whole look may also look good with a pair of Lovat coloured hose, depending on the tartan.

What about the cull shirt with the fly plaid and brooch, is that kosher?

Having never worn a fly plaid or brooch, I will leave that for someone with more knowledge on the subject.

Personally, I would only wear a fly plaid with evening wear.

For example, I wear it with my Prince Charlie jacket, but not with my Argyll, as seen below.

I guess I'd never wear it without a jacket.

ok so basicaly only with evening wear, or if your a piper with the piper jacket... hmm i have seen a pic on one of the kilt sites where the model is wearing the fly plaid without a jacket, kinda completes the look, and yet looks just a lil out of the ordinary for scottish attire.

Well, here's the deal. MY deal, at least.

Try it. If it looks good to your eye, and you like it, then go for it. I start with the "rules" (as I understand them, anyway) then decide how far I'm willing to bend them.

The pictures you saw were probably not of a fly plaid, but of a great kilt, which is one long piece of tartan, belted at the waist and slung over the shoulder. You mostly, but not exclusively, see that at Renaissance Faires.

I Concur. I never wear a plaid of any kind (except a belted plaid, at times) without a jacket.

I should say it's not something I would think of doing... but if you think about it, the look would be reminiscent of the great kilt - like the movie Rob Roy. If this is just for fun... say a party or a renfair or a pub... try it out! If it's a fine restaurant or formal occasion, you might want to reconsider. But what the hey... ya gotta live a little sometimes - yaknow!
