ckua.com is the public radio station up here in Alberta. They aren't strictly celtic, playing a wide variety of anything you won't hear on top 40 radio, and a fair bit you won't hear on campus radio either. Friday nights 6-9 pm MST is the Celtic show, which has always been one of my favorites. Here is the blurb from the web site. You can listen online at ckua.com. Just a quick plug for my favorite station :-D

"Much has been written by music columnists recently about the Celtic Wave that has caught the music industry by surprise with its rapidly growing popularity among young North American listeners. Other radio programmers may now be scrambling to catch up with this latest trend in popular taste but CKUA has known for a long time that Celtic-influenced music has tremendous appeal for music lovers, whether young or not-so-young.

THE CELTIC SHOW is hosted by an ex-patriate Scot and a veteran of Alberta's folk music scene, Andy Donnelly. With his soft brogue and wicked sense of humour, Andy entertains and educates his audience on the marvellous diversity of musical styles that reflect the influence of the Celtic tradition.

Selections range from gentle traditional ballads to hard-driving rock tunes complete with bagpipes. On any given night, you might hear the Tannahill Weavers, Dougie Maclean, Loreena McKennit, Sinead O'Connor, the Rankin Family, the Pogues, Silly Wizard, the Chieftains, Christy Moore, Ashley McIsaac or The Water Boys.

Touring artists often drop by the studio to put on a live performance and chat with the host.

THE CELTIC SHOW, Friday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m."

Like everyone else says, Highlander Radio is the way to go. If you want a few legally downloadable tunes from a great new Celtic group, check out this website:
    http://mp3.washingtonpost.com/bands/trasna.shtml

Trasna is a local Virginia group from Virginia's Shenandoah valley. The tunes are from their first CD and are samples (full songs, not just portions). They are a really high energy group, and the young lady who plays the fiddle is not only great looking, but very talented as well..

Speaking of beautiful fiddle players, I saw a group called "Sally's Gap" (I think it's a side project of a band called "Warsaw") at the L.A. Irsh Music Festival this year, the fiddle player wasn't on the CD so I guess she was new, or a guest, but she was the most amazing player I've ever seen; dancing and smiling and playing the fiddle like it was an extension of her body. She was obviously having a blast while she played. I tried to find out who she was, to see if she had recorded anything else, but haven't been able to track down anything about her. Anyone heard of them?

Sorry never heard of them but I will keep my ears open. On the theme of female fiddle players check out Winifred Horan from the band Solas. She put out a solo cd that is pretty freeking great. While you are at it check out Solas and Cherish the Ladies both of the bands she plays with featuring members of the incredibly talented Egan family.
