Stillwater heavyweights
I am interested in buying the SW heavyweight as I have no great feeling regarding the tartan selection either the Blackwatch or the Black shadow tartan are the only options. The only difference is the Black shadow is poly and the Blackwatch is wool. Does anyone have these and can they give me some guidance about which they like better and why? Thanks.

Black Shadow is NOT PV.
It's acrylic.

Thanks for posting this Millar.
I have been eyeing the Stillwater heavy weight too considering that winter is coming soon. All I have now is the canvas kilt that started this addiction & I don't think I want to wear it when the temp. is in the teens or lower.

Thanks That is what I meant. I should know by now that Poly is a term of art around here.

I have a SWHW in Black Watch. The original, when it came in acrylic. I gushed about it. And still do. Waiting for cooler fall weather to wear it.
You can't go wrong, will not be disapointed.

I own worsted wool traditional heavyweight kilts as well as a SW shadow "heavyweight". Speaking honestly, while I think the SW shadow is great for the money, it is not what I would call a true winter weight kilt and probably wouldn't be much protection on a bitter northern winter day. First of all the shadow kilts are 6 yards instead of 8, therefore the pleats are not as deep and do not overlap with as much fabric, and the fabric doesn't have the same density as worsted wool. Don't get me wrong... they are a good value for the money, but don't be mislead into thinking your getting the equivalent of an 8 yard wool heavyweight suitable for arctic conditions. The only way to get the protection of worsted wool is to pay for worsted wool. Actually I'm kinda wating to see what's coming down the pipe in the SW "heavyweight" line.

They are phasing out the black acrylic. It should be replaced with wool in about a month or so (I got this from them, when I asked when they would have one in my size again and was told, when the wool came in).
As for selection, I couldn't agree more. I understand only having a few different tartans, but everyone and their dog sells Black Watch, Royal Stewart and (Insert adjective) of Scotland. As an American kilt company, sell the American Tartan (and Canada too), and possibly the 4 different armed forces (I'd buy a SW heavyweight Army tartan in a second). There are probably a few other generic US tartans out there that could be considered.

I totally agree on that one. SW heavyweights on US armed forces tartans. I bet they would sell like candy.

Please allow me to chime in my opinion.
US military tartans would likely go like hotcakes.
USMC and USAF especially.
I know I'd get a USAF for my son, who is about to enter, without a thought!
Oops, I spilled the beans.

Count me in for a USMC! I've got a shiney new penny in my pocket just looking for a new home
