Help me please Graham or Hamish!
Alright, I must just be dense or something but I've looked at both of your sites with photos and I, for the life of me, just can't figure out whether your hose are rolled down, pushed down, or both. I have done several searches on this forum and I still can't figure it out. UGH!
I have never been much for wearing my kilt in boots since I have never been able to make it look right. Both of you gents look natural in your attire and I have been attempting to follow your lead but, alas, I have failed again.
What am I doing wrong? Should I just get a pair of hiking socks and scrunch them down to the tops of my boots?
Sincerely,
Sad and frustrated

Hamish did answer on one thread. I remember he said he used to push them down but when he saw photos of the results he decided he liked the rolled down look better. He does neat rolls so they end up looking folded.
I don't know if it was him or somebody else said to wear the socks inside out so they show the pattern when rolled.
Maybe trying Hamish's profile post history will help you better.
You've got to figure out if you're a push down or a roll down person, me, I'm a push down kinda guy.

FYI, I think I saw a post from Ham that he was heading to Wales and would not be responding for a while.

Do you think that he pulls them all the way up, folds them down half way so that the "fancy" part is inside out at the bottom covering his boots, then rolls the rest of the hose down to the top of the boot and finishes with folding the fancy part back up over the rolls? Does that make sense?
Dude, I'm still so lost it's not even funny.

Well I do believe (and correct me if I am wrong Ham), that he pulls them all the way up and then rolls them down as if he were wearing kilt hose. I have worn them that way, and get a lot of hey sexy comments!

Okay, why can't I picture that? Wouldn't that mean that the exposed area is the inside of the sock? How is that sexy?
Ugh, I'm posting pics to show what I'm talking about and you guys can tell me which one looks best.

First, it doesn't matter which way you fold, spindle, or mutilate your socks. It's personal preference all the way. I often wear runner's socks that just cover the foot.
That said, I think Hamish has said, and he can correct me if I'm wrong, socks up for semi-formal and better, socks pushed down for casual, socks rolled or pushed down with the tops folded for dress casual.

I roll over the top as normal then push down. Whatever you are comfy with, it's a casual look, there are no rules.

Alright, I got it now. What it all boils down to is that you guys can pull it off and I just look like an idiot when I try it. I look like a bad 80's flashback, complete with leg warmers. It's like Mr. Clean meets Olivia Newton-John... wearing a kilt and steel-toes.

but Newton-John was so hot...if you're close you're going to be okay.
It comes down to confidence. You've got several choices: low socks worn right, rolled/folded down or pushed down; knee socks either thick or thin, any colour; and no socks. Try them all, compare to the pics in that section. See which one is you for where you are. Context is everything. In the extreme summer heat, I just wear sandals, in court I wore off-white wooly knee socks. (With my kilt)
got a teenage daughter, ask her, with patience, maybe it's not the socks at all that are throwing off the look.
Anyway, relax. Prepare to crash and burn, read Riverkilt's recent thread. Before you go into anything new kilted just close your eyes and imagine a giant claymore strapped to your back. (just to stop the soldier boys, I mean the sharp kind, the other kind are not relaxing to have on your back.) Most people will see you with that image too.
