Things you can't do in a kilt

Swimming, I wouldn't do it, however, I received a phone call from one of my customers boasting he had just had been swimming in his kilt on the weekend. Now he did mention that he was three sheets to the wind.....the kilt survived the ordeal wonderfully.

As much as I love kilt-wearing, I refuse to let it become an inconvenience (I'm not one to "suffer for the sake of my art"), and I wear whatever clothing is appropriate to the activity I am engaged in. If one of my kilts fits the bill, so much the better.

I am a hard-core motorcycle rider (2 Harleys), I don't wear a kilt nearly as much in the summer because of this. I also have a recumbent bicycle that I enjoy, and a unicycle that I fool around with, neither of which work well with a kilt, for both practical and aesthetic reasons.

Annual fall work picnic is coming up, with lots of outdoor sports activities. Kilts and most sports work fine together, so I hear. Although I've never tried it, I imagine it wouldn't be a good idea to wear a kilt for the volleyball game.....for the same reasons you wouldn't wear a kilt to jump on a trampoline.

As the wife and I are expecting, we have attended some lamaze(sp?) classes. Since this activity requires alot of time on the floor with legs spread, I figured a kilt may not be the best mode of dress.

Really, all you have to do is look at it objectively. An aligator is really just a pile of purses, handbags, and shoes. And maybe a couple of sporrans. None of those things are really dangerous.

I don't rock climb in a kilt.

As much as I love wearing kilts, I understand that there are some activities that just aren't appropriate for kilts. I have been swimming in a kilt, but if swimming were something I did regularly I would wear swimming trunks. I don't see this as a "betrayal" of the kilt - after all, I've worn kilts exclusively for two years. I don't have to push the envelope to try and wear kilts all the time. You wouldn't expect someone to go swimming in their blue jeans, because that's what swimming trunks are for (though I've been known to skinny-dip). Rock climbing is just not comfortable in a kilt. Swimming is just harder in a kilt, with all that material weighing you down. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous in a kilt. Riding a horse is painful in a kilt.

Anyway, I don't worry about messing up kilts. I have painted and done construction while wearing a kilt. But some activities are simply not suited for kilts. I don't see this as "letting kilts down" in any way.
