    Doublets

Can someone tell what would be an appropriate event in which to wear something like a Montrose doublet? I know that a Prince Charlie jacket is on the same level as a basic tuxedo, but where would doublets like these fit in?

Formal functions, especially "white tie" events -- A Burns Night or St. Andrew's Ball, etc. You see quite the mix of PC's and the various doublets at these events here in North America.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe a Montrose doublet or Sheriffmuir is appropriate in a situation where the Saxons are wearing tails.

To each his own, Leathercubby...they're not for me (I prefer the Prince Charlie with the Inverness flaps myself), but if someone else wants to wear one, then why not?

    Dave,
I have a Sherrifmuir (I guess I spelled that right) jacket, which is at the same formality as the Montrose. I plan to wear mine to the upcoming Burn's Supper. These are usually very formal jackets/white tie affairs, and because of their price, few people have one. I got one because The Scottish Lion was closing and had one a half price. Typically this jackets are worn with a lace jabot and lace cuffs. Now the Sherrifmuir fastens at the top, and the rest is open. The Montrose is buttoned all the way up. I have seen very nice pictures of the Sherrifmuir worn with a black waistcoat, high collar wing tip shirt, and one of those old fashioned victorian style black neck ties. To me in my opinion (so take it for what you are paying for it),this dresses it down just a little bit to fit in with black tie dress.

Thanks guys, that fits it into the grand scheme of things. I doubt very much if I will ever need one. I will probably get a Prince charlie sometime, as I have had occasions to wear a tux. Probably won't get a doublet unless I come up with some excess funds, and that don't happen very often.

Oh, if you don't have a Prince Charlie or a black argyll jacket yet, get that before you even think of a Montrose or something like it.

    Sherrifmuir

I wear my Sherrifsmuir with my medals at Balls for the Scottish Country Dance Association and for formal events like Burns' Night and our St. Andrew's Highland Ball.
