    FINALLY a breath of autumn!

Since Rita, it's been UNSEASONABLY hot here. Rita skirted east of us, pulling air in off the plains away from the Rockies.... of course that means compression..... {remembers physics of compressing gas, carry the one, jeez it's miserably hot}. We had a week of 105 -- 108 F. (41-42C) and dry and windy....

    RELIEF!
Well, yesterday the gods smiled on us and we had a 55F HIGH!!! and over 2 inches of rain!!!!!!! Soft, gentle, kind rain. Grey, cool skies. MOISTURE for a dry and thirsty land! (does kilted happy dance in the rain)

I just had to share my joy,

Yippee! It finally got cool here yesterday, too. We're basking in it.

    Happy Fall, y'all.

    Nature's first green is gold,
    Her hardest hue to hold.
    Her early leaf's a flower;
    But only so an hour.
    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
    Nothing gold can stay.
Something about that makes me think about Autumn.

Autumn, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness! Truly, a beautiful season - to look at and to smell.

BUT, the thought of having to sweep and gather up from my lawns and shubberies what, every year, seems like tons of decaying leaves (usually very wet and slimy), and then transport them in numerous car loads from now until after Christmas, to the local authority's recycling point almost 20 miles away (because having glorious bonfires is now anti-social!), fills me with horror!

That, and what is yet to come early in the New Year, unless Global Warming totally spares us from the frosts and biting winds we always have suffered in Winter, is what causes me to dislike Autumn and Winter so much. Already, I am longing for the warm Spring sunshine and the renewal of life outside the house.

STILL! I mustn't get maudlin'. After all, I've lots of cracking kilts to wear and enjoy! ;)

    Smile Glorius autumn

This is my favorite season. We have had two weeks of 30+ degree mornings, and 60+ degree afternoons. The mountain behind the house is glorius patchwork of gold and orange and green. An almost physical feeling of ecstasy at the wonder of the way the goddess paints the earth in this season of harvest.

Oh yes, the dry Santa Ana winds blowing the already brown leaves off the few trees left in the city, the smell of brush fires wafting down from the upper deserts ... heck, this is the time we actually get to see a change in the seasons ... just not the changes you all get to enjoy.

'course, when spring comes, we get to watch the houses wash down the hillsides, that's always fun.

seasons or lack thereof and local music.

I hear ya, dread. Our seasons consist of a BEAUTIFUL spring, bluebonnets and all, but then in May, the sun bakes it all off to a nuclear wasteland brown and then it's just a holding pattern while we just live in the glare until fall... We have beautiful starlit nights though. Alas, the countryside is NOT so beautiful except those few weeks when March fades to April. We do have some hella good BBQ though! And lots of live music too.

In fact, beaucoup local musicians playing at the Erinshire Folkfest here on Oct. 22 or 23 (can't remember for sure, but can check them online at erinshire.com). Should be fun if any of you are in the area.

I'm getting nostalgic over all the descriptions, fall is my favorite time of year. I really miss the changing seasons -- there's no such thing as a proper autumn out here.
