If Your Kilt Could Talk

What would it say about you? It's previous owners, if it had any, like old WWII surplus kilts...? What do you think it would say about it's creator? If it is a traditional kilt, what do you think it would say about the new casual kilts? If it was a casual kilt, what do you think it would say about those old traditionals? What would it say about the life you live? What would it say about what you do? What would it say about it's own demands for acceptance, if it had any? What would it say about the places you wear it?

I thought about this for no reason at all today while on the bus. I know that it is crazy to anthropomorphise a kilt... But I am betting that most kilts have a story to tell, if they only could.

I was unsure where to post this because it covers so many areas. It's off topic, but it's also about kilts. So it's for wiser heads than mine to move it if it needs be.

Interesting thought.The new kilts I've bought would probley be happy because their outside in natures beauty daily.(I'm a landscape designer/forman).The ones I'm making myself will probly think their in H**L-I'm making them to wear while I'm working at a forge.

I've noticed some of the makers give out/sell a kilt passport to write down the memories. It's a bit over the top for me. The flip side is that I do wonder a bit about the history of the kilt I bought on eBay. It's army surplus and, while it wouldn't have seen combat, I do get curious. ...but then I give my head a shake.

I have held the belief that kilts should come with a birth certificate, hmm, round about since May or so. The idea came in to my head during a long bus ride as I was staring out the window. I saw a very pregnant woman on the side of the road, waiting for the bus. And it sort of popped in to my head that kilts should come to their owner with a birth certificate. A real kilt, real in the sense that it is custom made for the owner, er perhaps real isn't the right word here, but it will have to do, they aint manufactured so much as they are created. A good custom job with a rise, a drop, waist and hip measurements, all those things make that kilt unique to the wearer.

I am not sure why it is, but a kilt inspires me to be philosophical.

I have one from the Tartans Authority, just haven't gotten around to filling it out yet.

As someone who studies material culture, especially when it comes to period uniforms & clothing in regards to a historical period like the US Civil War, I can appreciate the value of documenting the kilt -- if nothing else, it gives my kilt even more of an heirloom status -- when have you seen a passport for jeans?

The passport documents who made the kilt, when and where -- that is what is important.
