Actually, Derek, in a world where self-control is fast becoming scarce, you are a breath of fresh air. It's difficult balancing being ready when a jerk comes along, & having a positive view of the world.

Maybe the man will think before he speaks next time. And if you run across him again, perhaps you can offer to buy him a beer & have a nice chat about the cilt with him.

Yesterday one man came to me in at the mall and asked me in Finnish "Are you a little stupid because you are wearing that ridiculous thing." I answered him in english, trying my best to sound like a real Scot "Sorry, I dont understand what you are talking about?" He then said in worst english I probably ever heard "Oh, I'm really sorry, I thought you were a finn!" I continued in finnish "Yes, I am and kilts are from Scotland". He went silent and took off

Sherry .. I certainly intend to treat the guy as if nothing happened next time I see him. If for any reason he starts warbling again, I will be prepared for it, and I will try and explain to him the reasons why I wear my Cilt. If that turns out just like water off a ducks back, I shall simply say cheerio and continue on my way.

I wonder why some people give no though at all to their rude and obnoxious behavior. There is a place for direct speech, but almost never with strangers. In such circumstances a sharp reply is understandable. Good on ye, Derek.

Derek, think you're right on about him having problems. Anyone that would open a converstation with a stranger with an insult has to have a screw loose. Your response was appropriate and can't think of a single reason for regret because you stood up to a shaming comment.

The proper response to a shaming comment is a smiling, polite two letter English expression for making something disappear inside yourself....

usually followed by a hand gesture made with holding the index finger, ring and pinkie down with the thumb.

But you stayed above that, so far, so good.

Yes I know others will disagree, but I don't care. That's what the Book says.

Derek, sorry to take away from your thread.
I would say this guy has real problems from his past, whereas you have the joy of the freedom of the kilt.

Even Jesus got angry a couple of times so don't feel bad. Just "don't let the sun go down on your anger". This is a great health principle. Carrying anger into the night only damages ourselves.
