    Argylls...

I did find a reference to A&SH in Singapore. Kilts were not mentioned.
It could be the Argylls, who were in Singapore when it fell to the Japanese. In fact, the 2nd Argylls fought their way down the Malayan peninsula and were one of the last British units accross the causeway into Singapore. The 250 Argylls were attached to Royal Marine survivors of the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse, part of the RM's Plymouth Division, and fought until the British surrendered Singapore in 1942.

    Cheers,

    Todd

In battle dress, they would wear a kit bag. One of my favourite pictures, from 1940 showing, somebody give me the right name, kit bags as part of webbing and a rare shot of a skean dhu. It's a press, posed, photo but I think the unweighted kilt adds to "the ladies from Hell" image.

    sporrans...

I have seen a picture from the First World War in the aforementioned "Scottish Divisions in the World Wars" which shows Highlanders (I believe they were Argylls) wearing canvas gas mask bags as sporrans.

    Cheers,

    Todd

The caption on this photo's site said it was the London Scottish. I've seen others that I think were from this same photo shoot that were said to be Canadian troops. If I had to choose, the former is the better authority.

I have an actual photo, taken by the German captors, of two highland prisoners showing exactly that. The Scots look as lethal as Hell and still have their bags. The Germans are all smiling but the officer between the two Scots has his hand right by his Luger.
I've got to get that scanned and posted, guess I've got to get a site too.

Not the period you're concentrating on, but here are some pix of a kilted soldier in Iraq last year:

He is Allan Spencer of the West Virginia Nat'l Guard (and a member of my reenactment group)....
